detox water

A super-easy habit to get you on your way to healthy

Drinking a lot of water every day keeps us hydrated and healthy.  The traditional recommendation is 8 eight-ounce glasses a day.  But sometimes I need to jazz it up with detoxifying fruit water to make it appealing enough to drink water instead of reaching for less healthy options…

Make it easy.

A couple super-easy things to do, which surprisingly make a big difference:

  • Keep individual containers (with straws preferably) full of water for each family member in the fridge like these (Amazon aff. link) – mark initials on the bottom with a sharpie, or just get different colored containers.  This one is a somehow a biggie – everyone having their own grab-n-go cool water container, with a straw, makes it infinitely more appealing, quick, and doable to drink water more frequently.
  • Flavor your water with healthy foods to make ‘detoxifying fruit water’.  This jazzes it up yet another level, makes it flavorful, and even helps flush toxins out of your body quicker than plain water.

Detoxifying Fruit Water – it’s brilliant.

The basic idea is simply to find some healthy foods, toss them in water, and drink.  Simple as that.

Detox water energizes you, fights bloating and even can help you achieve your weight loss goals.  I have three amazing combinations for you to try – mix them up in one of your carafes and away you go to delicious and detoxifying drinks!

detoxifying fruit water slim and trim

Slim and Trim Detox Water

So many great ingredients in this water: cucumbers are natural diuretics and will help your body release water. Also, lemons and limes loosen toxins in your digestive tract and help digestion. And grapefruits are high in enzymes that burn fat.

1/2 gallon water (split it into a couple carafes if you need to)

1/2 grapefruit, sliced

1/2 cucumber, sliced

1/2 lemon, sliced

1/2 lime, sliced

2-3 mint leaves

Combine all ingredients in your carafe(s) or pitchers. Allow the ingredients to steep in the fridge for 1-2 hours.

detoxifying fruit water raspberry

Rasberry Mint Water

This is one of my most favorite waters — who doesn’t like raspberries, I mean come on. Plus mint — two foods with amazing properties. Raspberries have cleansing properties, and mint helps relieve stress.

Combined these two are a brilliant combo.

1/2 gallon water

handful of raspberries (fresh or frozen)

3-5 mint leaves

1 lime, sliced

Combine all ingredients in your carafe(s) or pitchers. Allow the ingredients to steep in the fridge for 1-2 hours.

detoxifying fruit water shrub

Do you guys know about this?! I’ve only just recently discovered it, and only even more recently found out that it has its own name: shrub. This will rock your world.

So, sparkling water is a great option when plain water just isn’t cutting it for you. The little bit of fizz makes it feel special. But here’s the amazing secret: add a few drops of balsamic vinegar, and this takes it over the top.  Almost like soda — not as sweet of course, but the bubbles and great flavor — so amazing when you just need something different, but still amazingly delicious.

Also, you can use white balsamic (and there are a zillion flavors of it, eg cranberry pear), or just plain aged balsamic vinegar — either one is naturally sweet, slightly tangy, and contains energy-boosting micronutrients, which have been shown to reduce risks of heart disease and stroke.

I’ve read that for the sparkling water, Pellegrino is recommended because it contains sulfate ions, and sulfur is a needed mineral which helps cleanse and detox your body, and boosts your immune system.

Do it!  This will totally transform your water-drinking ways.

2-3 tablespoons vinegar (try various flavors!)

2 cups sparkling water

Mix vinegar with sparkling water and drink! Serve over ice if desired.
