Moms and grandmothers know where it’s at. There are no better examples of selflessness, inspiration, and strength than the moms around us. The collective wisdom and life advice of our elders is truly a thing to cherish.
Our moms have navigated the tricky things in life many times over – and typically have a few amazing ‘rules for life’ that have guided them through.
Some years back I ran across a list of 45 Life Lessons supposedly written by a 90-year-old woman, Regina Brett. Turns out she was actually just turning 45 when she wrote down these lessons, right after being diagnosed with breast cancer. As the internet sometimes does, the lessons went viral and the story got started that she was 90. In any case, regardless of her age, I’ve found many of her lessons to be great guiding reminders for how to live a happy and balanced life.
Here are my favorite nuggets of life advice from her list, and a couple at the end from my own brilliant grandmothers. Listen to mom’s pearls of wisdom!
Life Advice Rules
Rule 1. Life is too short. Enjoy it!
Rule 2. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and family will.
Rule 3. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
Rule 4. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
Rule 5. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don’t save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
Rule 6. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful. Clutter weighs you down in many ways.
Rule 7. Get outside every day. Miracles are awaiting everywhere.
Rule 8. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, and show up.
Rule 9. Yield – even if you have the right of way.
And two more from my own grandmothers:
Rule 10. No sad goodbyes – rather, see you again when the time is right!
Rule 11. Laughing is good for your soul – do it often and heartily.
Do you have any special, inspirational rules for life that have helped you along the way? Let me know!
Cheers to moms!
